Senior Director, Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, Inflammation

Reporting to the VP of Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, this role will lead global communications about Gilead's research and development efforts and future product portfolio in Inflammation. Managing a team of four direct reports, the role is responsible for helping to establish Gilead as an emerging leader in inflammatory disease by articulating Gilead's vision in Inflammation across external and internal audiences, raising awareness of unmet medical needs that our science and programs seek to address, and communicating progress against these goals. This role works closely with Inflammation leads in Global Commercial Product Strategy, Clinical Development and Medical Affairs, and engages colleagues across Public Affairs' global centers of expertise and regional/country teams to help inform cross-functional priorities and drive tailored implementation at a local level.

Responsibilities include:

Build and lead a team to drive global communications about Gilead's Inflammation portfolio and pipeline. Set a vision and priorities for the team, provide direction as well as hands-on support as needed, and ensure team members have development opportunities and continue to grow in their careers at Gilead
Engage with leaders in Global Commercial Product Strategy, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs and Government Affairs to drive cross-functional plans that help to establish Gilead as an emerging leader in inflammatory diseases
Drive launch communications planning for Gilead's first product in Inflammation, filgotinib, an oral, selective JAK1 inhibitor, which has been submitted for regulatory review in Europe and Japan for an initial indication in rheumatoid arthritis; additional geographies and indications will follow
Serve as the primary contact for communications engagement with Gilead's collaborative partner Galapagos NV, ensuring aligned plans and messaging across the co-promotion markets
Inform priorities and collaborate on programs related to Inflammation in other Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, community engagement and corporate giving. Programs may include corporate advertising, corporate website and Intranet content development, stakeholder mapping and outreach, funding opportunity announcements, among others
Engage Public Affairs leads across all geographies to shape the development of global disease awareness and thought leadership programs and work with the countries to adapt these programs for local implementation
Maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade reporters to shape reporting on Gilead's Inflammation product portfolio and pipeline
Regularly scan for potential or emerging issues and convene cross-functional teams to proactively address them
Manage PR agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead's business conduct policies
Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 15 years of relevant experience, which includes 10-12 years of healthcare public relations experience
Demonstrated experience driving communications plans that support business priorities
Experience leading teams and supporting both team performance and individual team members' development
Expertise in media relations and issues management
Ability to interact with senior management, academic experts and patient advocates appropriately, with confidence and ease
Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams
A passion for scientific communication and ability to understand complex scientific data
Prior communications experience in inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is preferred
Understanding of the US market access environment is required. Experience working outside of the US is a plus
Experience working with joint ventures/collaborative partners is preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company
