The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for the position of Creative Director. Reporting to the ICA's Executive Director, the Creative Director will serve as an integral part of the senior leadership team. Application review will begin September 16, 2019. The Creative Director will develop and deploy a comprehensive, integrated and highly distinctive brand identity for the ICA, as well as a dynamic marketing and communications strategy to establish the ICA's global reputation and ensure local relevance. The Director will lead a full-time team of three or four (comprising staff in graphic design, writing and editorial, and digital content) as well as part-time staff and/or student workers. The Creative Director will work closely with other senior staff at the ICA, across VCU and with external consultants and content producers. Driven by a commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural equity, the ICA at VCU is dedicated to producing and sharing new art and ideas, and to supporting creative communities. The ICA's program includes artist commissions, exhibitions, film screenings, talks and discussions, publications and performances. It features artists and thinkers from around the world. The ICA is in direct dialogue with VCUarts, the #1 public art school in the country, and is a space for multi-disciplinary experimentation across a major, urban public research university while simultaneously providing opportunities for creative collaboration locally and internationally. Designed by the renowned Steven Holl Architects, the ICA's 41,000 square foot building opened to the public in April 2018, and welcomed over 100,000 visits in its first year. Position Responsibilities ?? Devise, lead and establish the ICA's overall brand strategy, identity and voice ?? Work with the Executive Director and senior staff to ensure the ICA's identity is fully aligned with its strategic goals ?? Shape brand standards and create procedures to ensure all products are brand aligned ?? Implement strategic communications, marketing and digital engagement activities working with external media relations consultants and VCU's University Relations team ?? Develop and implement an innovative program for the use of digital technologies, working with in-house and external technology specialists, programmers, designers, and developers ?? Lead and motivate a team of graphic designers, copywriters, web developers, content producers, etc. in order to maximize their talents ?? Supervise the department's daily workflow, assign project workload, and monitor deadlines and budgets ?? Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of internal and external information; obtain feedback from the public and internal personnel through surveys, public opinion studies, and/or focus group interviews ?? Identify the characteristics of diverse target audiences and constituencies and determine the most effective communication techniques for reaching and motivating these groups for maximum support of ICA activities ?? Evaluate trends, assess new data and keep up-to-date with the latest marketing and brand techniques ?? Exercise authority of the position with diplomacy, honesty, integrity, humor, and tact ?? Form strong relationships across departments, and foster increased digital literacy across the organization. Minimum Qualifications. ?? Bachelor's degree in marketing or a combination of equivalent training, education, and experience required ?? A minimum of 3 years of paid professional-level experience in marketing, communications, brand development or a related field ?? A record of successfully leading, developing, and implementing brand strategy across organizations, ideally within the cultural sector ?? Demonstrated experience with various communications and content channels and platforms ?? Hands-on experience in the creative process, marketing, graphic design and/or brand development ?? Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or interest in/commitment to do so ?? Well organized, highly motivated, and able to work and lead in a fast-paced and digital environment. ?? Sound management skills with regard to projects, budgets and personnel with a proven ability to collaborate across departments ?? Must be self-motivated, strategic, creative, entrepreneurial, and energetic ?? Proven flexibility and willingness to perform a wide range of tasks as necessary ?? Must possess exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; including writing, editing, and proofreading
