The South San Francisco Communications Center is housed within and managed by the Police Department and provides 24-hour dispatching services for police for the Cities of South San Francisco and Pacifica, after hours police and public works for the neighboringTown of Colma. The Communications Center is staffed by 12 dispatchers; 2 Supervising Dispatchers; and a Communications and Records Manager. The Communications Center handles approximately 35,000 calls for service per year involving requests for Police or Fire Department. SSF Communications is a team-oriented center responsible for both dispatch and records functions. Its Windows-based, RIMS dispatching system is the cutting-edge of CAD/RMS technology and is extremely easy to learn and use. The South San Francisco Police Department has 83 sworn and 35 civilian positions. The Department's philosophy is one of participative management, with a high degree of emphasis on training and education.
Under general supervision, Dispatchers receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone and radio traffic; dispatch and coordinate police, public works, and other municipal equipment via multi-frequency two-way radio; maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records, and radio logs.Job Description URL:

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience : One year of work experience requiring maturity and responsibility involving some public contact.
Training : High school graduate or equivalent. Additional education in law enforcement; or communications experience in the military or public safety is desirable.
Licenses or Certificates :
Possession of a current POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery certificate with a T-score of 48 or higher obtained within the 12 months immediately preceding application submission.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California Drivers license, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.
The POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Battery Test is administered by South Bay Regional Public Safety Consortium (SBRPSTC) and is designed to meet the Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

SBRPSTC requires a non-refundable materials fee from applicants for taking the test. There are a limited number of seats for the examination dates listed at SBRPSTC. Register early before all seats are sold out. SBRPSTC does not accept walk-ins for this test.
ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR POST ENTRY-LEVEL DISPATCHER SELECTION TEST BATTERY CERTIFICATE WITH A T-SCORE OF 48 OR HIGHER. Certificate issuance date must be no older than 1 year from the date of application submission. Applicants who fail to submit a copy of their POST Entry-level Dispatcher Test Battery Certificate may be eliminated at any point in the process.
The Examination Process will consist of the following independent parts:
1. Examination process will first consist of a review of application materials including a copy of the POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery certificate with a T-score of 48 or higher from the academy.
2. Candidates with a complete application packet, including submission of a valid POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery certificate with a T-score of 48 or higher valid within one year of application submission, will be placed on the eligible employment list valid for one year. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process and placement on the eligible employment list.
3. Top scoring candidates on the eligible list will receive an e-mail request to complete and submit a personal history statement (PHS).
4. Based on review of the Personal History Statement, candidates may be scheduled for an oral interview examination.
Appeals concerning administration of an examination must be submitted in writing within 2-business days from the date the event occurred.
Appointment: Before a conditional employment offer is made, candidates must take a polygraph examination. If successful, a conditional employment offer is made and candidates are then required to successfully pass a psychological evaluation and medical examination, a drug screen, personal interviews, background investigation, fingerprinting, and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work in the United States. The process will end with the Chief of Police or his designees interview. The Citys standards must be met before the final appointment is made.
Salary: $33.73-$40.99 / Hour
Retirement: In compliance to AB 340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 2% at age 60; employee pays approximately 7%, OR 2% at age 62; employee pays approximately 6.5% of pay, depending on the individual's eligibility. Social Security and Medicare participation; and option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after retirement account.
Health Insurance: City offers choice among two HMO and two PPO plans, and offers vision and dental benefits. City pays 100% of vision and dental core plants for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO health premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family). For PPO, employee pays additional cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City offers flexible spending plans (medical and dependent care), supplemental life insurance and a discretionary benefit option for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.
Leaves: Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, depending on length of service.
Holidays: Fourteen paid holidays, per year, including one floating holiday.
Bilingual Pay: A premium of 2.5% for speaking Spanish, Tagalog, or American Sign Language. Qualifications determined through testing procedures.
Education Incentives: Upon completion of 2-full years of employment, a premium of 2.5% for Associate Degree or 60 units in work-related courses and 5% for Bachelors Degree.
Programs: Long term Care, Employee Assistance Plan, Credit Union, Long Term Care Plan, Deferred Compensation, Credit Union, Recreation Classes, and Reduced-fee Childcare Programs are available.
