Carpenter's Latrobe Specialty Metals operations, based in Latrobe, Pa., manufacture high-performance specialty alloys serving aerospace, energy and other demanding markets. Latrobe is part of the corporation's Specialty Alloys Operations division.
Set up and operate non-destructive testing equipment to locate and measure internal and external defects in product.
Coordinates schedule priorities with supervisor to determine material to be inspected.
Locates material, hooks / unhooks, uses electric operated transfer cart or directs / operates Fork Lift or Straddle Carrier operator or uses pendant crane in movement of material to and from test equipment.
Reviews Mill Orders to determine ultrasonic specification requirements.
Technician reviews ultrasonic inspection manual, (SOP) for proper test procedures.
Sets up and adjusts the ultrasonic equipment in accordance to the proper test procedure.
Weighs material, places in stock location. Removes material from stock to fill orders, cuts test pieces, trims ends, and scrap from bars, packages for shipments.
Operates charging and discharge tables to properly feed product through stuffing box for immersion non-contact testing.
Checks size of product against ordered size and tolerances, checks finish RMS against order requirements. Inspects for point and cold drawn.
Fills empties and cleans immersion tanks. Places additives in water as required.
Determines disposition of material following testing by using standard operating procedures, customer specifications, and/or L.P.S. manual. Follows standard operating procedures for disposition of rejected product and refers questionable material to supervision or technical personnel for final disposition.
Stamps, marks and otherwise identifies defects in the product.
Performs all recordkeeping and documentation necessary to accurately report all data pertinent to Ultrasonic testing methods.
Adjusts equipment for proper operating by checking such things as linearity, resolution, and beam spread against reference standards.
Performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment. Assists in planning P.M. work based on production demands on equipment. Contacts maintenance department to perform work for which the operator is not qualified or equipped.
Uses calibration standards and follows procedures in evaluating non-destructive testing instrument characteristics in accordance with NAS standards. Maintains records of certification.
Operates auxiliary rotating or handling equipment. Occasionally bump straightens product. Assists operating and maintenance personnel as required.
Operates data transmission and receiving equipment to enter, send and receive data. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
Strong math and analytical skills
Able to communicate in written and oral format
Must be qualified Level II as defined in NAS 410, AS7114, as well as various customer specifications.
