What is a VP of Regulatory Affairs?

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Government Relations & Regulatory Affairs, the VP, Regulatory Affairs, is the primary point of contact and regulatory advisor to senior leaders in Assurant?s Global Lifestyle business segment.? He/she will manage a team of regulatory attorneys and associates responsible for advancing the Global Lifestyle business segment?s goals, protecting against regulatory risk, and ensuring that business decisions that are, or could be, affected by state governmental action are made on an informed basis.

Primary Responsibilities:

Lead Advisor to Business Segment:

You will serve as the primary point of contact and advisor to senior leaders of Assurant?s Global Lifestyle business segment on all regulatory issues involving mobile device protection products, extended service contracts for consumer electronics and appliances, and related services (?Connected Living?); vehicle protection and related services (?Automotive?); and credit and other insurance products (?Financial Services?).

Manage Team of Attorneys:

Oversees a team of regulatory attorneys and legislative/regulatory counsel responsible for advising and providing technical expertise on state insurance department interactions and rate and form filings; product development; and researching, analyzing, and determining the legal impact of statutes, regulations and court opinions on specific business practices and procedures impacting the Global Lifestyle business segment.

Coordinate with Business Law and Compliance Teams:

Serve as regulatory counsel to business operations and compliance attorneys, as well as other support functions for the Global Lifestyle business segment, including product development, regulatory inquiries and filings, and market conduct issues.

Strategic Leadership:

Partner with senior business leaders, business and compliance lawyers, and state lobbyists to develop and implement strategies to advance and protect against regulatory risks to Global Lifestyle business goals.

Regulatory Issues and Trends:

Responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and preparing for emerging and existing regulatory and legislative issues, while consulting with senior leaders to determine the impact and risk.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required
  • 12+ years of experience representing insurance companies before state regulatory agencies
  • Related experience before insurance regulators in New York and Florida (Preferred)
  • 10 years in the practice of law
  • 3-5 years? experience adapting and successfully leading others through change in a fast paced environment
  • Must be a highly motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, and well-organized individual.
  • Subject matter expert in mobile device protection and extended service products for consumer electronics and appliances
  • Ability to evaluate complex legal and regulatory issues and recommend appropriate and defendable courses of action
  • Highly autonomous and self-motivated work ethic; demonstrating sound judgment, initiative, and an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrate an ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature, and the capacity to maintain composure while working under pressure.
  • Must demonstrate strong executive presence, interpersonal, and highly developed writing and speaking skills.
