Overview

Aerojet Rocketdyne Coleman Aerospace, based in Orlando, Florida, is seeking a Systems Test Technician . At this location, AR Coleman produces high fidelity one, two and three stage target rockets.

Using technical procedures, process plans and complex mechanical and electrical drawings, technicians perform rigging and final assembly of the launch vehicle and test support equipment, participate in system level testing, test and install explosive devices, and assist Test Engineers in launching these target rockets to support interceptor testing. Launches are executed from U.S. military aircraft and are typically performed outside of the continental U.S. (OCONUS). Aircrew positions on the airborne launch team are required.

Mission planning, training, engineering development, and administrative duties will be performed at our main office in Orlando, Florida with system level testing, launch vehicle assembly, and integration with the launch aircraft being performed at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. Some travel between the two locations will be required.

Applicant will assist Test Engineers in developing testing strategies, setup test configurations, provide labor and schedule inputs and work with a multi-disciplined functional team of technicians, engineers, and test personnel to ensure a high quality integration and test process.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

20% - Authoring and/or assisting test engineers in the development of test plans and procedures. 

45% - Participating in pre-launch parachute packing/rigging, system level integration, testing, data review, troubleshooting and corrective action. 

15% - Training in both company processes, launch vehicle systems and related test engineering tasks. 

15% - Assisting in aircraft integration and launch operations.

5% - Launch support equipment maintenance and upkeep.

(Note: Estimated travel time per year is approximately 12%.)

Requirements

Requires an Associate's technical degree and 3 years related experience or the equivalent of education and experience in aerospace, trade school diploma, military experience or similar technical operations.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with solid propellant rocket motors is desirable. Excellent mechanical skills and experience reading and following complex technical drawings, procedures, and checklists is a must.
  • Previous military or civilian experience as an FAA certified Airframe and Power Plant mechanic is highly desirable.
  • Must be comfortable working independently or within a team environment and must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD ‘Secret’ Security Clearance with COMSEC.
  • Must satisfactorily complete safety training for handling, testing, and installation of explosive devices. Environmental testing and/or instrumentation experience is a plus.
  • Must be willing and able to travel inside and outside of the continental U.S.
  • Must have experience or possess a working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Must be able to operate basic electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, signal generators, etc.
  • Must be capable of learning the operation and maintenance of specialized support and launch equipment used for system level operations and troubleshooting.
  • Must be able to complete an ESD training class and practice prevention methods.
  • Experience coordinating and participating in heavy lift operations and rigging involving bridge and mobile cranes.
  • Must possess basic computer skills and familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience packing parachutes and rigging heavy air drop loads is highly desired.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime and weekends to meet critical schedule dates.
  • Required flight duty. Must be able to obtain an FAA Class III (or higher) medical certificate and satisfactorily complete USAF Physiological Training.
  • Experience with airfield operations is a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience preferred.
  • Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

    The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
